Scunthorpe 0-1 Bristol City

February 17, 2008

Bristol City moved second in the Championship table thanks to Bradley Orr’s fortuitous 83rd-minute winner. Orr curled a hopeful ball into the area and Scunthorpe goalkeeper Joe Murphy was distracted by Tamas Vasko’s run, allowing the ball to sail into the net. Scunthorpe will feel hard done by as City created few other chances. The Iron had produced the best efforts but could not beat Adrian Basso with long-range shots from Kevan Hurst, Jim Goodwin, Marcus Williams and Jack Cork. Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins: “We will stay up – the result is disappointing, as is the manner of it.The initial reaction (for the goal) was offside, but well done to the linesman, it was a great decision. “If we’d have had a little...

Bristol City 2-1 Sheff Wed

February 17, 2008
By

Bristol City maintained their bid for promotion by overcoming a determined Sheffield Wednesday. After seven minutes Michael McIndoe found Dele Adebola, who finished calmly with a left-foot shot from 18 yards. City pressurised but Wade Small wasted a good Owls chance when he mis-hit from close range. City keeper Adriano Basso then smartly denied Sean McAllister. Bradley Orr made it 2-0 when he fired from Adebola’s pass before Lee Bullen grabbed an injury time goal. Bristol City boss Gary Johnson: “We don’t take any defeat lightly and a lot of hard work went into getting things right again.”There was a decent atmosphere in the ground and Dele Adebola scored the type of goal we brought him in for early on to give...

QPR 3-0 Bristol City

February 17, 2008
By

QPR took another step away from the Championship relegation zone with a comfortable win over Bristol City. Patrick Agyemang scored twice, slotting home from 12 yards for the first and then netting from close range after Akos Buzsaky’s shot fell into his path. Buzsaky put the result beyond doubt in the second half as he scored QPR’s third with a rifled shot from 25 yards. City nearly grabbed a consolation late on, but substitute Ivan Sproule’s 20-yard shot hit the post. QPR performance manager Joe Dunbar: “We were all quite pleased with the performance. We played very well from the off.”There were long periods when City didn’t get the ball and I don’t think we dropped our tempo even when we were...

Bristol City 1-0 Cardiff

Marvin Elliott bullies in the match-winning header for the Robins A second-half strike from Marvin Elliott sealed the Severnside derby after Steve Thompson’s early red card. The controversial sending off for the in-form Cardiff striker came after he made a 15th-minute tackle from behind. The Bluebirds held on until the break despite long-range efforts from Lee Trundle, Bradley Orr and Lee Johnson. But in the 57th minute Elliott rose from a melee to head home Lee Johnson’s corner from close range, sending Bristol City third in the Championship. Trundle – whose unhappy relationship with the Cardiff fans dominated the build-up to the game and who was baited mercilessly throughout – also claimed the goal, saying it had struck him on the way in. Bristol...

Bristol City 2-0 Ipswich

December 5, 2007

Two Bristol City first-half goals left Ipswich still looking for a first away win in the Championship this season. Marvin Elliott opened the scoring after five minutes with a 30-yard effort which flew into the bottom corner. Bradley Orr doubled the lead from the spot when Alex Bruce was adjudged to have handled Ivan Sproule’s cross. Ipswich pushed forward for a way back with Adriano Basso saving from Pablo Counago and Owen Garvan, but they were unable to make the breakthrough. ——————————————————————————– Bristol City boss Gary Johnson “It’s quite a turnaround in a few weeks and I’m proud of the lads for their first-half performance. “They didn’t need any incentive after being beaten so heavily. “Unfortunately, it was so intense that some legs went in the second...

Watford 1-2 Bristol City

December 5, 2007

Substitute Darren Byfield’s injury-time goal saw Bristol City condemn leaders Watford to a third defeat in a week. Ivan Sproule was twice foiled by Mart Poom and Enoch Showunmi headed against the post as City threatened early on. Marlon King’s cross was tipped on to the post by Adriano Basso, who saved Jobi McAnuff’s shot as Watford rallied. Liam Fontaine’s cross was headed in by Showunmi but John-Joe O’Toole’s nodded header seemed to have won a point until Byfield volleyed in Cole Skuse’s cross. ——————————————————————————– Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd: “I thought I would be glad to see the end of November but December has started just as badly. We’ve obviously got a lot of work to do. “Fundamentally football is about scoring goals and keeping clean...

Championship reality zone

November 24, 2007
By

At the start of the season we all knew every game would be a battle but an unbelievably good start to the season created a veneer of invincibility. A 90th minute goal conceded at home to Charlton followed by a walloping at Ipswich and a second consecutive home defeat against Leicester now managed by the almighty twat Holloway sees city’s season take a dose of Championship reality. The next couple of games now become vital for city to prove if they really are contenders for the top half of the table or if the party is over and we’re thankful for the 27 points so far. My thinking that both are true. City are going to be in the top half of the...
